You'll probably have watched, or read about, Jamie or Hugh's controversial programmes as part of Channel 4's Food Season, Chicken Run and Fowl Dinners. 95% of all chickens reared for meat are reared in intensive conditions: housed in overcrowded, dimly lit sheds, and reaching their slaughter weight in around just 35 days. The lack of space to move around, combined with the use of chicken breeds that grow extremely quickly – can result in painful leg problems, skin diseases and heart failure.
The RSPCA are asking retailers to stop selling standard chicken by 2010. This will mean all chickens bred for meat will be free range, over 35 days old when slaughtered and given enough food, space and shelter to lead a happy life. Support our challenge. Make some noise the supermarkets cannot ignore - chirp up and add your voice to the petition today.
