"Learner drivers should take lessons for a minimum of 12 months according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI)."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5359426.stm Should learners have to have a minimum number of lessons or a minimum time after gaining a provisional licence before being able to sit a test?

Why?
Some people pick up driving alot quicker than others. It doesn't mean that in the long run they are going to be worse drivers. If they have been taught everything they need to know and both the driving instructor and test say they are good enough to drive what does it matter if they have been learning for less than 12 mths. I passed my test in 8 months ( took me two times ).

Depends on experience, if for instance you have been riding a motor bike then you probably have excellent road skills.
I had my first and only fault accident at 18. I had only been driving a few months,

I would personally raise the age of driving to maybe 19 or 20 could save a lot of lives

Best to make people wait and get more experience. I got licence after a one-week intensive course. I passed the test, but could not really drive properly. Soon after passing, I had a very bad accident.

Personally I dont see how anybody can say it will take a certain amount of time, what about the people who have 5 lessons a week they are not going to do that for a year but then compared to those who only have 1 a month yeah its going to take a lot longer.
Then you also have to think about people learn how to drive at different rates also, some people can have 10 lessons and be ready to pass their test and get no faults others can take 50 lessons and still fail their 5 test. I dont see how it is possiable to set a minimum time requirement and think it would be very unfair to do so, I personally dont see how certain people get a lisence at all though. The people you see doing 40MPH everywhere they go wether its a 60 limit or a 30 limit really annoy me, if you were doing that for your test you would fail simple yet you see so many people do it. |
